Social Media Policy
Practice: Tranquility Therapy
Business structure: Sole Trader
Data Controller: Sarah Michelle Butler
Policy effective from: 10th September 2026
Review date: 10th September 2027
Purpose
Tranquility Therapy may use social media to provide information about the practice, counselling and related wellbeing topics.
This policy explains how I will maintain appropriate professional boundaries online and protect the privacy of clients.
Professional and personal accounts
Where practicable, professional Tranquility Therapy accounts will be kept separate from my personal social-media use.
Privacy settings on personal accounts will be reviewed periodically and used to limit unnecessary public access to personal information.
I recognise that privacy settings cannot guarantee that information posted online will remain private and will therefore consider carefully what I publish.
Tranquility Therapy profiles
Professional profiles will represent Tranquility Therapy accurately and will not intentionally misrepresent my qualifications, experience or services.
Professional accounts will be used primarily for:
* information about Tranquility Therapy;
* general counselling or wellbeing information;
* professional communication; and
* appropriate promotion of the practice.
Client confidentiality
I will not knowingly publish information that identifies a client or reveals that a particular individual is receiving counselling from Tranquility Therapy.
Therapeutic material will not be turned into social-media content in a way that compromises client confidentiality.
Online boundaries with clients
Social media is not a substitute for the confidential counselling relationship.
I will maintain appropriate professional boundaries when interacting online with current or former clients.
I will not use public social-media interactions to discuss a client’s counselling or personal circumstances.
Where a client attempts to communicate therapeutic or sensitive information through social media, I may redirect them to an appropriate private method of communication.
Friend and follow requests
Proposed Tranquility Therapy default: I will not normally accept personal friend or connection requests from current clients through my private social-media accounts.
Professional Tranquility Therapy accounts may be followed by clients if they choose to do so, but I will not infer anything therapeutically significant simply from whether a client follows or interacts with the account.
Posting and communication
Before publishing material, I will consider:
* whether it is professionally appropriate;
* whether it protects confidentiality;
* whether it reflects Tranquility Therapy accurately;
* whether it respects professional boundaries; and
* why I am posting it.
Search activity
I will not routinely search for information about clients online as part of the therapeutic relationship.
If an exceptional circumstance creates a reason to consider doing so, I will reflect carefully upon the professional and confidentiality implications.
Review
This policy will be reviewed as the practice’s use of social media develops or if new platforms or methods of online communication are introduced.
