Practice: Tranquility Therapy
Business structure: Sole Trader
Data Controller: Sarah Michelle Butler
Policy effective from: 10th September 2026
Review date: 10th September 2027
Purpose
Tranquility Therapy is committed to providing a counselling service in which clients are treated with dignity, respect and fairness.
I aim to create a therapeutic environment in which people from different backgrounds, identities and life experiences can feel safe discussing their experiences without fear of discrimination or judgement.
Inclusive practice
I will seek to make my practice welcoming and accessible to clients regardless of their background, identity or personal circumstances.
I recognise that each client’s experiences are individual and will not make assumptions about a client based upon a particular characteristic or group to which they belong.
Where a client has an accessibility or communication requirement, I will discuss reasonable ways in which counselling may be adapted to support their needs where this is practicable within my competence and the service I provide.
Equality and discrimination
Discrimination, harassment or degrading treatment are not acceptable within Tranquility Therapy.
Clients should be able to discuss experiences relating to identity, difference, discrimination, relationships, culture, disability, belief or other aspects of their lives within the therapeutic relationship.
If a client feels that I have acted in a discriminatory or exclusionary way, I encourage them to raise this with me. Concerns may also be raised under the Tranquility Therapy Complaints Policy.
Awareness of bias
I recognise that counsellors, like all people, can hold conscious or unconscious assumptions and biases.
I will seek to reflect upon my own attitudes and assumptions through professional reflection, supervision and continuing development, particularly where these could affect my work with a client.
Where I believe a matter is outside my competence, I will consider this openly and professionally rather than allowing assumptions or personal discomfort to influence the therapeutic work.
Continuing professional development
I will maintain and develop my understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion through appropriate professional learning, reflection and supervision.
I will consider whether additional training or support is needed when working with experiences, identities or circumstances with which I am less familiar.
Communication with clients
My commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion will be reflected in:
* the way I communicate with clients;
* my professional materials and website;
* my therapeutic practice;
* my policies and procedures; and
* the way concerns and complaints are handled.
Review
This policy will be reviewed periodically and where learning, client feedback or changes to the practice indicate that an update would be beneficial.
